Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Westport Swim Club?
The Westport Swim Club (WSC hereafter) is the USMS Masters Swim Team that represents the Westport YMCA @Masters’ YMCA Nationals and also represents Connecticut Masters at local, regional, national and world swim competitions. Our team consists of all different levels of swimming ability – from the fitness swimmer to the crazy, highly competitive swimmer.
- When do we practice?
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 8:15-10:00 PM. Practice officially starts at 8:35 PM, but the pool opens up at 8:15 PM, so you can get in at this time to warm-up on your own.
We also practice on Saturdays from either 10 AM – 12 PM or 11 AM – 12:30 PM depending on the YMCA pool schedule. By Thursday we will know what time we can start on Saturdays, so we strongly urge you to register your email and a notification will be sent to you or you can always get the latest scoop by visiting our website:
http://www.westportswimclub.org.There are other non-organized swimming opportunities which you can find out about either by reading the Bulletin Board @WSC’s website or you can swim solo at Lap swim at the Westport Y. Available pool times could be found by viewing the Westport Y pool schedule and hours of operation.
- What are typical workouts like?
Take a look at our past workouts that are available on our website. We accommodate all levels and each lane can modify the workout sets to accommodate your lane.
Workouts are led by our “in pool” coaches: Mike Laux (Tuesdays & Thursdays) and Dave Samuelsohn (Saturdays). If neither can make it to workout, any number of life time swimmers will concoct a fun & challenging work-out for you.
The Masters’ Option: (you’ll hear this often, trust me)
Masters swimming is fun, therefore, you set your own pace and create your own challenges. Do what you can and are comfortable doing. There is absolutely no pressure to do the whole work out, nor is there pressure to compete at meets – but they are fun! - Where do we swim?
Most of our training is at the Westport Weston Family Y, located at 59 Post Road East, Westport, CT 06880, phone: 203-226-8981, website: http://www.westporty.org/. When opportunity permits we practice long course outdoors at the Wilton YMCA or short course meters at Staples High School.

- How can I join the Westport Swim Club?
- Join the Westport YMCA. This gives you the added bonus of swimming with us as a team at Masters’ YMCA Nationals every April. If you would like to swim @Masters’ YMCA Nationals, you need to be a member of the Westport YMCA no later than January (the drop dead date, as per the rules of the meet).
- In addition to the YMCA membership fee, there’s a YMCA Masters’ team fee due every September (the beginning of the new season).
- To compete in USMS competition you will need a USMS registration card.
Contact Mike Laux if you’re interested and need more information. We recommend that you join us for a workout to see if it’s the type of training that interests you. We have different levels (from highly competitive to fitness swimmers), so don’t think you have to break a minute in the 100 free to swim with us. We welcome all levels!
